Olympiacos NY has appointed Gonzalo Sanchez Moreno as its Director of Coaching.
Gonzalo joins Olympiacos NY with an extensive resume as player and coach, who brings years of experience and knowledge to Olympiacos NY.
As a player, Gonzalo had a long career with FC Barcelona (FCB) where he played as a right-back for FCB for 17 years for all categories. Gonzalo started his playing career at FCB’s youth academy (the famed La Masia) at the age of 8. In the 90s, he was part of the FCB teams coached by the legendary Johan Cruyff and played with players such as Pep Guardiola and Luis Figo. He was part of FCB’s first team under Cruyff during 1994 UEFA Champions League Final. From 1995-1996, he signed for UD Almeria. He then rejoined FCB in 1997. He retired a year later due to a knee injury.
As a coach, Gonzalo has worked around the world, guiding youths of various ages and coaching professionals. From 2013 to 2014, he worked with the Madagascar U-17 national team. He also won the 2014 Champion Clubs’ Cup Indian Ocean with CNaPS Sports Club from Madagascar. From 2015 to 2017, he was the head coach of the Bangladesh Olympic and senior national team where he won the bronze medal at the South Asian Olympic Games in 2016.
Most recently, Gonzalo coached at FCB Academy PRO and Manhattan Kickers.
Gonzalo currently holds a UEFA “A” License and his UEFA Pro License (highest UEFA licensure) is pending.
As Olympiacos NY's first Director of Coaching, Gonzalo will be responsible for elevating Olympiacos NY into a premier youth club by overseeing the development of the club's youth program. Specifically, Gonzalo is tasked with developing the club's playing philosophy and methodology, including creating an overarching training program, as well as building and supervising Olympiacos NY's coaching staff, all in accordance with the standards and guidelines set by Olympiacos FC.
